UCSF offers a four-year training program for outstanding international medical graduates (IMGs) working toward American Board of Radiology (ABR) certification through the Alternate Pathway. This program is ideal for radiologists with strong clinical, teaching, and research skills, especially those interested in academic radiology.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate a commitment to clinical excellence, passion for education and teaching, robust scholarly activity or strong research background, prior leadership or administrative activities, service to professional societies, past contributions to the field of radiology, and volunteerism.
Program Structure
- Four years of training at UCSF, with the first three years in ACGME-accredited fellowship.
- Transfers from outside institutions will be considered, as the Alternate Pathway may be completed at more than one institution. More information on transfers can be found on the ABR website.
- Annual contract renewals are based on performance evaluations per UCSF and GME guidelines and successful completion of prior fellowships.

ACGME-accredited
- Nuclear Medicine
- Pediatrics
- Interventional Radiology
Non-ACGME
- Body/Abdominal
- Cardiothoracic
Research Year
Research year will require external funding and prior approval.
Other fellowships and options may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and eligible to obtain an H-1B or J-1 visa (requires passing USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3). Applications will not be accepted without passing all three USMLE step exams.
- Must be eligible for a California medical license before starting the fellowship.
Application Process
In addition to the application pre-requisites and requirements listed on the ABR website, submit the UCSF fellowship application along with the following:
- CV
- ECFMG certification
- Medical school diploma & transcript
- Residency completion certificate (and prior fellowships, if applicable)
- USMLE Step 1, 2, and 3 score reports
- 3 recommendation letters (one from a prior residency or fellowship director)
- 1-page personal statement
- Copy of current visa (if applicable)
- Headshot photo
- 3 Clinical references
Selection & Credentialing
- Shortlisted candidates will undergo virtual interviews with UCSF faculty.
- Final acceptance requires GME credentialing and visa approval from the UCSF International Students and Scholars Office.
ABR Certification
Graduates who meet ABR requirements may take the CORE and Certifying Exams.
