UCSF Profile

Biography

Yihua Zhu is a research scientist at the Bone Quality Research Lab in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at UCSF, led by Dr. Galateia Kazakia. His work focuses on advanced image processing and analysis techniques, specifically in high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for bone quality assessment.

Yihua earned his Ph.D. from UCSF in May 2024, where he specialized in optical imaging applications in dentistry. His doctoral research included developing a pioneering dual-wavelength short-wave infrared (SWIR) intraoral camera for early caries detection, featured in multiple NIH-funded clinical studies. Additionally, he explored optical coherence tomography (OCT) for monitoring remineralization in dental lesions and applied machine learning to enhance fluorescence-guided intraoperative therapy.
