7T and 3T Whole-Body MRI at Mission Bay

A full study imaging application must be submitted for review and approval before an imaging study begins.


Scheduling Information for Researchers

All MRI scheduling requests are submitted via Qualtrics.

  • Scans are booked in 30-minute increments.
  • Reservation time must include 10 minutes for setup and breakdown.
    (Example: A 60-minute reservation allows for 50 minutes of actual scan time.)
  • Approved requests will receive a calendar invite as confirmation.
  • Signed Apex orders are required at least two days prior to the scheduled MRI.
  • Participants will be contacted one day before their scan with prep instructions, directions, and COVID screening.
  • A private room is available for consenting and testing; reserve via the Qualtrics scheduling form.

Please note:

  • Cancelations made within 24 hours of the MRI reservation will be charged for the amount of scanner time reserved.
  • Wait for confirmation or an email response before confirming appointments with patients.

MRI Safety and Training for Researchers

MRI safety training and orientation of the Surbeck Lab is required for anyone entering Zone 3 or 4.

Required steps:

  1. Complete the online MRI safety training course via MyAccess → Learning Center
    • Course name: UCSF Level II MRI Personnel Safety Module
  2. Submit required documents:
    • MRI Screening Form
    • Zone 3 Access Form

MRI Simulator

The MRI simulator provides a realistic experience of the MRI environment, allowing participants to:

  • Familiarize themselves with the scanner setup
  • Get comfortable with the confined space
  • Experience typical MRI noises before the actual scan
